Leasehold reform?

As an extension of the government’s planned clean up to the leasehold system following comment revealed in the press last year of 10 yearly doubling ground rents on new build houses; the Law Commission released last week its terms of reference to simplify the enfranchisement legislation.

There are failings no doubt with the current legislation starting with the fact that there is not one single Leasehold Reform Act but a process based on more than 50 Acts of Parliament amending existing legislation.

The proposals are potentially far reaching and can be seen here:

What is certain is there will be extremely vociferous comment no doubt from the landlords’ camp.

The commission will report back to the government by summer 2019 with its recommendations.

As much as we await to see what transpires over the year ahead, tenant’s do need to be professionally advised.
